The Spartan Race, an innovative obstacle racing competition held around the world, is coming to the LIMA AboitizLand Estate in Batangas next month. The event was founded by world class adventure racer Joe DeSena in the mountains of Vermont in the United States. At present, a total of 130 races are held around the world annually.

To be held from 3-4 May 2019, the LIMA event will kick off three Southeast Asian series legs and will serve as the stepping stone for the competitive Spartans to qualify for the Asia-Pacific Championship to be held in August and the World Championship in September later this year.

There will be three races to be held at the LIMA leg of the Spartan Race, beginning with the “Hurricane Heat” which begins at 7 o-clock at night on 3 March and goes on for 12 hours until 7 o’clock the next morning. This is the first time that this race is being held in the Philippines.

The following day, two more races are to be held – the popular “Spartan Sprint” and the more competitive “Spartan Beast.”

The Spartan Sprint is an introductory 5+ kilometer 25 obstacle race designed to test strength, endurance and grit. It is open to both elite and first-time racers. Racers are to be grouped into three sub-categories: Elite, for racers wishing to qualify for the Asia-Pacific and World championships; various age groups; and the Open category for first-time racers who wish to experience the Spartan Race.

The Spartan Beast, meanwhile, is a more difficult 21 kilometer 30 obstacle race which will complete the 2019 Spartan Trifecta medal in the Philippines.

Organizers of the event are expecting some 4,000 racers and spectators, including some from outside of the region. As much as 40% of the participants are females.
