Non-Batangueño Ethnicities Living in Batangas: Bicolanos Highest

Ever wondered how many non-Batangueños actually live in Batangas? This is something that has always intrigued me given that I was born and raised inside Fernando Air Base in Lipa City, where the Batangueño ethnicity, at least at the time when I was growing up, was the decided minority.

Data provided by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) after the Census of Philippine Households conducted in 2000 give us a clue. Why the same statistics on ethnicity were not gathered in subsequent population surveys undertaken is not explained.

The Province of Batangas’ total population as discerned from the 2000 census was 1,902,241 people. To put this figure in context, the population of the province as surveyed by the 2015 National Census was pegged at 2,694,335. This represents an increase of 792,094 people over the 2000 figure or a 42% rise.

Of the 1,902,241 people living in Batangas in 2000, Tagalogs naturally represented the largest ethnic group, totaling 1,840,076 in all. Of this number, 924,918 were males while 915,158 were females. Regrettably, the PSA statistics did not specify what percentage of these Tagalogs were native Batangueños.

Those of Bicolano ethnicity represented the largest group of non-Tagalogs living in the province. There was a total of 11,661 Bicolanos living in Batangas, 6,022 of which were males and 5,639 females.

The second largest non-Tagalog group in Batangas was that composed of the Bisaya or Binisaya. The PSA did not articulate this group, but by inference we take it that this group is composed of speakers of Visayan languages and their permutations but not from Cebu, Iloilo and Western Negros. There was a total of 10,487 Bisaya/Binisaya in Batangas in 2000, 5,285 of which were males and 5,202 females.

A distant third was the group of the Cebuanos, totaling 3,951 in all. Of these, 1,876 were males and 2,075 were females. Further back were the Ilonggos or Hiligaynon from Iloilo and West Negros, totaling 3,895 in all. Of these, 1,977 were males while 1,918 were females.

There were 21,196 people from all other ethnic groups living in Batangas, 10,653 of which were males and 10,543 females. There were also 355 foreigners living in the province, 232 of which were males and 123 females.
